MAGIC LABS
A mentorship program for underrepresented interdisciplinary storytellers interested in expanding their creative practice in VR and mixed realities.
ABOUT THE LABS
MAGIC LABS are development programs for diverse storytellers (Queer, Trans, BIPOC, and/or Neurodivergent Artists) to explore and create new works in XR. Each year, SOMETHING MAGIC selects a cohort of 6 to 8 storytellers from across artistic disciplines with an interest in exploring XR as a stage for their next production. For six months, these artists are given individualized tools and mentorship to explore their own project.
MAGIC LABS offer customized residency experiences that focus on creation, design, and professional development. Creators have the opportunity to experiment with form, content, and structure, regardless of where they are in the process of creation. The lab meets online bi-weekly, fostering a space of creative exchange, with participants working through individualized action plans with our dramaturgical support and technical resources.
APPLICATIONS OPEN IN APRIL 2023
We partner lab members with professionals from the industry for mentorship, while also providing ongoing guidance through workshops and hands-on sessions. Participants build a pitch document of their unique concept and are introduced to all the elements of an XR pipeline, giving them the tools to lead their projects from concept to realization.
MAGIC LABS culminate in a virtual showcase, where industry professionals and audiences are invited to witness presentations of the projects developed that year — pitch documents, digital samples, and a Q&A with the storytellers from the cohort. The showcase is a way to share samples of the work in development, get feedback, and gain interest from potential producers and/or funders.
